In Asana Classes this week at LCY we’ll access a deeper power within via the 2nd Limb of Yoga, The Niyamas in Yoga Sutra 2.32 along with asymmetrical poses to lead us back into symmetry of the One. In fun asymmetrical poses we’ll have one leg off the floor or one arm off the floor or one arm and one leg simultaneously off the floor to strengthen different musculature and make us more expanded in the full symmetrical pose and merge with the One.
The first limb of Yoga, The 5 Yamas are universal social practices. The second limb of Yoga, the 5 Niyamas, evolve from individual practices necessary to build up the yogis own character. Mastery of Yoga would be unrealizable without the observance of the ethical principles of the Yamas and Niyamas.
The Niyamas consist of:
1. Saucha- cleanliness of body and mind
2. Santosha- contentment
3. Tapasya- self discipline to let go of anything in the way of spiritual advancement, training the senses
4. Svadyaya- study which leads to the knowledge of the Self and Self awareness, self study
5. Ishvara Pranidhana- surrender of the limited self to the supreme Self. Making the supreme Self the target of concentration more than the ups and downs of life.
The 7:15pm Friday Night Meditation Class cultivates all of the Yamas and Niyamas.
Namaste, have a beautiful day, and see you on the mat!
