Still The Thought Waves Of The Mind And Ride The Wave of Bliss

According to Patanjali’s definition in the very first sutra, yoga is the cessation of the activities of the mind. The vrittis are any sequence of thought, ideas, mental imaging, or act performed by the mind, intellect or ego… pretty much any state of mind whatsoever.  The essential point for understanding yoga is that all forms or activities of the mind are products of matter and completely distinct from the soul or true Self, pure awareness or consciousness. The mind is merely a physical substance that selects, organizes, analyzes and molds itself into the physical forms of the sense data given to it.  In and of itself it is not aware of them. Sense impressions or thoughts are imprints in that mental substance, just as a clay pot is an item made from the substance clay, or waves are movements of the sea.

The mind can be compared to the software and […]

Detox Your Body and Mind with Twisting Poses, Forward Bends and Yoga Sutra 1.11

Detox your body and mind with Twisting Poses, Forward Bends and Yoga Sutra 1.11 and move your spirit into a pristine space of pure energy and a blissful, high state of Consciousness!

Forward Bends slow you down so that you can imbibe Yoga Sutra 1.11 which teaches about memory as a form of knowledge. There are different forms of memory. In Yoga we practice discriminating between them to cultivate the influence of constructive and life-enhancing memories as causative influences (karma) to empower our yogic path to Higher Consciousness.

Twisting poses support us in this endeavor with their naturally detoxifying and purifying benefits. There are physiological benefits to the circulatory system and internal organs, structural benefits to the musculoskeletal system, and focusing, de-stressing benefits to our consciousness.

Yoga Master B.K. S. Iyengar describes twists as a “squeeze-and soak” action. The organs compressed during a twist, pushing out blood filled with metabolic by-products and toxins. […]

Experience The Power Within

What is meditation? It has been described by many different people in many ways. Everyone has their own personal experience. Nevertheless, the yogic text Shvetashatara Upanishad says, “Those who are devoted to meditation and contemplation see the divine energy hidden in its own qualities. It is the One who rules over all causes from time to the soul.” This is the experience of the yogic sages. When they went deep inside in meditation, they experienced the power within. When you go inside, the same divine energy that exists within everyone is awakened. The yogic sages tell us if we only wander around the world outside we do not experience the awakened energy that lives within us.  We simply stay on the surface of life and feel we’re not really in touch with ourself, there is something more, but we just can’t get to it. As we go within, we have […]

Back bending Bliss

Backbending can be one of the most therapeutic parts of yoga. Several studies show how backbends can stimulate the central nervous system, boost the immune system, help counteract damage of bad posture by realigning the spine, relieve back pain, bronchial distress, scoliotic deformities, tennis elbow and frozen shoulder to name a few. Aside from the tremendous physical benefits, there are also psychological and emotional benefits of backbending. They can help shift energy leaving the mind more clear and focused and they can help open the heart chakra and emotional center. Yoga Master B.K. S. Iyengar even recommended backbending to cure depression.

This week we’ll focus on a variety of backbending poses along with Yoga Sutra 1.10 to open the heart and cheer the spirit. We’ll learn about the form of vrittis (modifications of the mind) from sleep and how we can translate the pure sleep that gives us renewal, energy and […]

Cultivate Pure Mind At Friday Night Meditation Class 7:15pm-8:45pm

Dedicating more time to silence and meditation is so valuable in observing a Sattvic or pure mind rising out of the state of Samadhi, the Eighth Limb of Yoga.  The practice of meditation distills and dissolves our attachment to words, concepts, and false identities that make up most of our speech, our hearing and our daily world.

Everyday we use words and images to describe objects, people or events. Our world is so attached and identified to the use of words, but really words are empty objects. They are only a perception of an actual object. Yoga Sutra 1.9 reminds us that a word is nothing but a combination of sounds used together to convey a meaning.  An attribute, characteristic, or identity is then created from these words and images. Confusion, projections, arguments and insecurities are caused when we associate qualities such as good/bad, rich/poor, honest/dishonest, this or that with […]

Tip Toe Through Your Yoga

Join us this week in classes for creative sequencing with a focus on cultivating the energy in the feet to ground you into the earth, dissolve imaginary concepts in the mind and create a Lightness of Being!

The first chapter of the Yoga Sutras concentrates on the problems encountered and ways to overcome them in our attempts to reach a state of Yoga or union.  We’ll take the support of Yoga Sutra 1.9 as our theme. Yoga Sutra 1.9 enlightens us on the modification of the mind called vikalpahs or verbal delusion that follows from words with no corresponding reality. Sounds develop concepts and then the mind cements itself to a concept. These concepts have no corresponding reality but we begin to live them and this can create stress in the mind, body, life and even our yoga practice.

Here are some translations of Sutra […]
